American Diplomat Engages Cologne Students

November 2, 2006.
As part of the U.S. Consulate’s school outreach program, U.S. diplomat Desiree Humphreys visited the Ursulinengymansium in Cologne to talk to a 12th grade English class. As the students had just read Joyce Carol Oates' young adult novel "Big Mouth & Ugly Girl," the lively discussion focused on high school life in America, including security issues and gun control. Drawing on her own school experience, Ms. Humphreys illustrated the diversity of U.S. culture and society and conveyed to the students a realistic picture of what it is like to be a high school student in the U.S.

The School Outreach Program was established in 2003 in an effort to help German students gain a better perspective of life in the United States.
