March 22, 2006. As part of a two-day visit to the City of Dortmund, Ambassador Timken and Mrs. Timken inaugurated an "America @ your library®" partnership with the city’s public library on March 22, joined by city and library officials and students who had participated in a school exchange with U.S. partner schools. The America@your library initiative will provide financial support, a broad selection of books on American society and culture and other information material to selected libraries in order to respond to local information needs on the United States, especially the needs and interests of young people. In addition, the U.S. Consulate will work in partnership with libraries to develop workshops, readings and other cultural programs about the United States. The opening day program included a discussion by the Ambassador and Mrs. Timken with a group of students from the bilingual track of the Geschwister Scholl Gesamtschule in Dortmund and a reception. Earlier in the day, the Ambassador and Mrs. Timken had discussions with students at Dortmund’s Heisenberg high school which has well-established exchange programs with Dortmund’s sister city Buffalo and with Springfield, West Virginia.
