Consul General Matthew G. Boyse

Consul General Matthew G. Boyse

 

Matthew G. Boyse arrived in Düsseldorf on August 13, 2006 to assume the duties of U.S. Consul General. A career Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Boyse has served in a variety of economic and political positions, primarily in Europe and South Asia.

His most recent assignment was in Washington, DC where he was the Executive Assistant (Chief of Staff) to the Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs. His other assignments have been: Deputy Minister Counselor for Political Affairs in New Delhi, where i.a. he reported on the Kashmir issue and India-Pakistan relations; Economic Officer in Berlin, where he covered Internet and energy policy, as well as economic developments in the former GDR; Political Officer in Warsaw, where he was responsible for contacts with the Solidarnosc trade union and post-Solidarity political parties; Economic Officer in Moscow, where he reported on labor and social issues and was Civil Air Attache; Political/Economic Officer in Dhaka; and Consular Officer in London. Prior to entering the Foreign Service, he was an East German and Soviet affairs analyst at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Munich and DAAD Fellow at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik research institute in Ebenhausen, outside Munich.

Mr. Boyse received a B.A. in Latin and Greek philology from Haverford College and an M.A. in Soviet/East European Studies from Columbia University. He has also studied at Middlebury College and Yale University. His wife, Eleanore, is a former State Department officer.

Mr. Boyse grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, near Detroit, but is now resident of Connecticut. The Boyses have three children – two in boarding school in the U.S. and a third, who is taking a "gap year" before university as an intern at a Düsseldorf bank.

Mr. Boyse has received the State Department’s Superior Honor Award (3x), Group Meritorious Honor Award (2x), Meritorious Honor Award, and Sinclaire Award for the study of difficult languages. He speaks German and Polish fluently, while his Russian has become rather rusty.
